2023: Residential Water Softeners & Iron System Discharge Rule Revision

Maine's revised water treatment discharge rules, updated in 2023, now allows overland discharge of water from softeners and iron systems in specific circumstances for single-family and duplex residences. This change primarily applies to septic systems not built to manage backwash water.

Effects on septic systems:

  • Water softener and iron removal system discharge can impact septic systems.
  • This includes potential infiltration of brine or iron leading to concrete decay and filter blockages.

  • Such infiltrations can trigger premature septic system failure.

There are several considerations to factor into whether you should direct your discharge away from the septic system. Site conditions will determine the complexity and cost of this task. Check the full rule text below for more information.
