Riser and Access Requirements

Changes in Residential Septic Tank Regulations:

  • Before 2009: No mandatory depth or riser regulations for septic tanks or pump stations.
  • From 2009 to 2023: Access point, within 6 inches of grade, compulsory at pumping opening.
  • After 2023: All systems must have one unburied access point placed for easy pumping.
  • Pump Stations or Effluent Filters: Additional above-grade access points are required for all systems installed after 2009.

Upgrading of access points to current stipulations is not a requirement until the system is updated. However, for easier location and maintenance, it is advisable to equip the system with purpose-made plastic or concrete product for access.
