Maine Water Well Setbacks

Existing Well:

  • When designing a septic system or replacment drain field, a licenced site evaluator has to take into consideration any exsting water wells on, or in close proximity to, the propery.
  • This design becomes the permit, and will note the well location(s) as well as facilitating any necessary varience paperwork if the setback is less than 100 feet.

Existing Septic:

  • When a well is drilled in close to existing septic system componants, there is no "design" or permitting process involved. The licenced driller is obligated to place the well greater than 100 feet from the septic system whenever possible.
  • The well driller may determine that it is not practical to maintain the minimum setback distances from disposal fields.  In these instances, the minimum setback distance for bedrock water supply wells may be reduced, depending upon the amount of casing or liner seal installed below ground level.
  • The well driller is required to submit a complete Setback Reduction Notification Form to the Commission, on a form provided by the Commission, for all wells drilled less than 100 feet from a disposal field, or 60 feet from a septic tank, holding tank, or lift station.
